What I Mean by a World Model

A working definition for connecting perception, temporal prediction, and action in embodied learning systems.

A useful definition

I use world model to mean a learned representation that makes relevant future outcomes easier to predict and control. The emphasis is on usefulness for decisions, not on reconstructing every detail of the environment.

Three questions

  • What remains stable across observations?
  • Which future variables can the model predict?
  • Can the representation support counterfactual actions?

This framing keeps the research question tied to behavior instead of making the model an isolated compression exercise.
